A trek through the east kimberley

Howdy folks!!  Its been a long time between writing anything in here I know, im not very good at getting things down sometimes!  But really wanted to share this with you all - I just got back from an incredible hike through the majestic and rugged East Kimberley region of Western Australia with 2 great mates of mine, and thought i'd share some of the photos from the trip with you.

We did about 50kms over 2 and half days from a little place called Harry's Hole, to the largest single drop waterfall in the Kimberley, and possibly WA, called Revolver Falls, and then onto the western shore of Lake Argyle, where we were picked up by boat and whisked back to Kununurra via Lake Argyle Resort.  It was an absolutely amazing time, with plenty of waterfalls, mountain ranges, swim throughs, up hills, down hills, sweeping vistas, gorges, red rocks, amazing views, you name it it was all there!  Accompanied by Benjamin Broadwith and River Raine we got through relatively unscathed (spinifex scars and scrapes and cuts from rocks and sticks dont count as war wounds in the Kimberley!) and mate it through safe and sound.  It really was a phenomenal time, one of those things where it is really hard to explain how majestic and wild the time actually was - camping out under the stars, carrying everything you need with you on your back, exploring places seen by only a lucky few in the whole history of time, in one of the most remote and unforgiving, yet beautiful parts of the world.

Check out the some of the photos below from the trip that I took - i'm not usually one for taking photos, but I felt this trip needed documenting!

And in other news, plenty of gigs coming up!!!  Check out the TOUR page for details of them - Adelaide Fringe Festival shows coming up, some in Kununurra, and then an EP launch tour that starts at the beginning of April.  So yes, a new CD is coming your way in the very near future!!  About time eh?

Catch you all very soon im sure, somewhere in this great land of Oz!

Hi Chris
I have been wanting to walk from harrys Hole to Revolver falls and on to Argyle for some time. i have been to Harrys Hole and walked a fair way up the gorge system and wondered how it would be to continue.
Is it easy to stay on track? Dont want to get lost!
I was wondering how you and your mates did it. Did someone know the walk? Map? Google ?
Really love to hear from you.
Cheers
Annie from Wyndham

Gday Annie and hope you're well!
Its certainly an amazing hike going that way! Its not the easiest of walks as there's a fair amount of swimming involved to get through the gorge, about 4 or 5 of them, and the longest one would be about 400m or so from memory. We floated our packs through on our sleeping maps and carried some massive plastic bags to put our packs in to stop them getting too wet - with only a small amount of success I may add!

We didn't know the way when we did it, we studied google maps fairly extensively and got lost a few times along the way - it took a whole day to get to the end of the gorge system, then a full half day to get to where we camped in Revolver Gorge, and from there its another hour hike up to the base of the falls. Then another 6 or 7 hour hike to get to the lake - and just to let you know we move pretty darn quickly when we do it compared to others (so i've been told anyway!)

There's no paths, no trails or anything to follow either, and its really rugged country up there, and once you're out of the gorge and on top of the Carr-Boyd escarpment theres very limited water supplies, so you'll be wanting at least 5 litres for that section. Its also not easy to find the right way to get to Revolver Gorge once you're on top of the range unless you're handy with maps and directions, we took topo maps with us when we did it - we've actually done it twice and both times we didn't get it quite right!

All the doom and gloom aside, its on incredible hike though, and certainly puts you through your paces! Not something i'd recommend for the faint of heart, but if you've got fortitude and stamina and don't mind a ridiculous amount of heat and sweating then go for it! Although at the moment I wouldn't go as Revolver probably isn't flowing due to this dismal wet season we're having!

Anything else you need let me know - i'll try to find a map we put together from google maps of the route we took if you like, and I can email it to you if you want to pass me your email?
Cheers!

Chris

Hi Chris, Thanks for the post. Sounds like an awesome hike. There's something pretty special about the rugged nature of the Kimberley. I've lived up here for a few years and am always looking for the next adventure. Would love to see that map you shared with Annie if that's ok. Thanks mate. Hope you're well. Gary

Chris,

Loved reading this, and seeing Ben's photos of the EK. Would love to get that map, as I've been keen on a walk from Harry's Hole to Revolver Falls.

Absolutely spectacular country out that way - hardly ever seen too!
