FIVE SONGS FOR SIX STRINGS - 2013

Picture
Chris' first recording featuring his custom made Churchill 6 string Acoustic.  The title says it all really!  4 of the songs are original tunes penned by Chris, the 5th track is a cover of Richard Thompson's "The 1952 Vincent Black Lightning), which has been a staple of Chris' live set for years, and one of those songs which he has been constantly asked to record a version of - so here it is!  Recorded, mixed and mastered by Rob Walker and Chris over 3 days, but spread out over 6 weeks due to touring schedules - the first day in a studio in Perth, the 2nd in Perth and Mandurah, and the 3rd in Mandurah.  With a couple of rollicking tunes in the form of "Getting Things Done" and "Home", it also features perhaps Chris' most tender moment so far in his career - a simple little song entitled "That's What They Call Learning".  It also has an ambitious instrumental by the name of "The Fiddler's Green" with some extremely tasty fretboard and slide work.  A good little stop gap between the last album "It Goes To Eleven" and the next one due out at the end of the year.

IT GOES TO ELEVEN - 2011

Picture
Chris released his first full length album in July of 2011.  Recorded over a 2 week period in Kununurra, in the remote Kimberley region of WA, it comprises 11 original tracks, with Chris playing all the instruments on the album.  WIth a good mixture of tunes ranging from some frantic bluegrass to sweet soulful country numbers, to some straight out rock n roll and even a celtic, indian, classical type instrumental to kick off proceedings, this is a well assured debut from Matthews.  Truly Australian and with the incredible and outstanding guitar playing that Chris has become famous for.

LIVE IN AUSTRALIA - 2007

No longer available, this was a 9 track recording from Gulliver's Tavern in Kununurra, encapsulating everything good about a live Chris Matthews concert.  With a mixture of his own originals and some well chosen covers from Jeff Lang, Tom Waits and Richard Thompson, and some good in between song banter between Chris and the crowd, it shows his remarkable entertainment skills, electrifying guitar work and natural rapport with the audience.   If you can find this recording anywhere it will be a worthy addition to your musical collection.

THE BOXCUTTERS - "FREQUENT FLYER" EP    2006

This recording was a collaboration between Chris and Rohan Lindsay on drums and vocals, and showed just how powerful a combination of guitars, vocals and drums could be.  Naming themselves after a rather terrifying incident from some years previous, Matthews and Lindsay recorded this absolute balltearing little EP in 2 days in a house in Kilmore, Victoria.  Listening to it now its hard to believe there is only 2 people on there making it all happen - no overdubs, no bells and whistles, completely live in one take and absolutely no studio wizardy.....just simply 2 fellas giving it everything they've got with an acoustic guitar, a Marshall Quad box amplifier, a couple of voices and one drum kit that gets absolutely pummelled by Rohan along the way.

OUT OF TWO - EP released in 2004

This 4 track EP was recorded by Troy Trigwell at Woodstock Studios in Melbourne.  All recorded live in the studio, with Chris playing 6 and 12 string acoustic guitars, singing and stomp box,  and recorded and mixed in a day and a half.

MUSIC FOR SPARE ROOMs - EP released in 2002

Recorded in a house in Willeton in Perth, Western Australia, this 4 track EP comprised Chris on guitar and vocals, Craig Silvey (yes that is the now amazing and well esteemed Australian author!) on Cello and bass guitar, and Nick Zwart on percussion kit and kaboodle, all completely live to a digital 4 track.  Craig actually learnt one of the tracks on the day as he had never heard it before!  Released in a very small run of only 200 copies, and a hand made and signed cover for each individual copy.

HIPPY JAZZ - EP released in 2001

Chris' first ever released, and starring Nick Zwart on percussion and Craig Silvey on cello, this was recorded at SAE in Perth, Western Australia by Rob Trainer.  Replete with 5 tracks and musical interludes between each song (2 guitar interludes, 1 percussion and 1 cello) this demonstrated that, while perhaps Chris really wasn't that good musically and vocally at this stage, the passion and energy that he is now famous for was there even at this early stage of his career.
